The Journey North

Finn pushed the stack of books they’d taken from the Ochloroc city across the camp table at Henge. “This is what we’ve found.” They had rendezvoused with the Manhir and Kristofer’s troops again after fleeing from the pursuing Ochloroc for the past two days. The river had carried them out of the mountain and left them in the next valley over. As they’d hiked back to the agreed upon location, they’d occasionally spied Ochloroc troops in the far distance. By Finn’s best estimate, the little buggers were half a day behind them.

All around him soldiers were striking the camp, getting ready to leave before the Ochloroc arrived. He’d found a relatively quiet spot where he could go over the books they’d found together with Henge, Elina, Kristofer, and the librarians from Uneltemus.

Henge picked up the top book — it looked tiny in his slab-like hands — and leafed through it. “It’ll take some time to go through these and find out where we need to go, if there’s even anything about that in here.”

“We’ve got maybe two hours before we should get moving again,” Finn said.

Henge scanned the spines of the next two books. “That’s not enough. I don’t even know where to start.”

“Maybe I can help there,” Tanja said. She placed the books side by side and pointed at two of them. “These two contain the most mentions of Niflheim. One of them is from Uneltemus, the other the Ochloroc got from somewhere else. This one,” she pointed at another book, “contains a few drawings, one of which we figure might be a map of some kind. The rest only contain a few lines here and there.”

Henge leafed through the third book Tanja had pointed out, scanning each page for hints what they were about, until he arrived at the map drawing. He placed the book on the table, and traced the lines on the drawing, flipping back and forth to different sections in the book as he came to the various items that were labelled in the image. “It is indeed a map of some kind. This reads like the secondhand account of someone who claimed to have travelled to Niflheim and back again. The author mapped out the various locations as best he could, based on the account he was given.”

“That’s a good starting point,” Finn said.

“It is if it’s true,” Henge said. “And even then, much of it is vague. Like this section. ‘After the tunnel he battled his way through the forest of Myrkvidr, until he stumbled upon the remains of an overgrown road. This he followed and soon he found himself in the city of Svartalfheim’. I’ve cut out a lot of the tales around it, but there are pages of this stuff. Not much in the way of actual directions, more a tale of the adventures he had as he walked from place to place.”

“Does it give a general direction?”

Henge flipped to the start of the book and ran his eyes over the first few pages.
